Bamboo Blade

Original release by Huzzah-Doremi
-----------------------------------------------------------

Bamboo Blade can be safely tagged with sports and slice-of-life. It's all about Kendo and the cute girls practicing it.

One sentence summary (OSS): "Enthusiastic kendo captain chick and broke laid-back teacher dude gather promising members for their school's kendo-club who develop their personalities and relations while practicing kendo."

It doesn't get any deeper than that, but it's still a pleasant way of spending your time on the train. The girls are cute, their personalities develop adequately, the fighting scenes are ok (it's kendo, which is incredibly boring to watch), the animation and art decent, the humor warm and fitting and each character gets their own slice of screen time.

The series becomes involutarily funny thanks to the subs, although the subbers can't be blamed for that. But it somehow makes you grin when little girls in kendo gear and bamboo blades are screaming for "men" on the top of their voice. :D
I'll leave you to find out for yourself why they do, but I can assure you that it's not because they are sexually starved or such.

Sex & Violence: Everything is safe. I swear! They might cry for men but they don't really mean it. The only instance where conservative parents might get red ears while explaining things is the behaviour of a girl-stalking girl.

Conclusion: Nothing special, nothing spectacular. Apart from the character design it's so average you'll be hard pressed to find any reason to watch it - or not watch it.

Hmm, how would this display in an iPod classic?

i don't know. It depends if your ipod can handle movies with higher resolutions.

try to download a single episode and keep me informed of the results. :)

Hello DirtyFinger.
What software you use for conversion?
I tryed memcoder, but can`t make these beautiful small subtitles. All i got, its ugly big subs for half of screen.
Please post options for your coder.
Yes, as source i used mkv with separated subtitle file.

Maybe i will relese itouch videos too.

i tried mencoder too, but i didn't even figure out the correct parameters to generate iphone compatible movies.

after some searching i discovered MediaCoder for iPhone, which is an easy to use (and thus somewhat limited) tool for converting.

http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/device/ipod_touch.html

you can't change the size of the subtitles directly, but you can scale the subtitles to the movie diagonal (default) or to height, which allows the small subtitles.

And if anyone wants to release iphone anime series and likes my style, then i'd be glad to have you team up with the iPhoneReady blog

just tryed MediaCoder. And its perfect.
Trying various settings at Hayate no gotoku ep 1, but result looks ugly.
please post your settings for subtitle applet: position, outline, blur, FONT.
Do you use any Effects?
Also i need: Format Resolution, Video bitrate, FPS, and Audio bitrate settings.

I like your style, and want produce beautiful releases as you.

heh, i think in the case of bamboo blade the subs were hardcoded by the original release group.

Try Arial Black for font, Movie Height for Scale and leave all the rest on default (H.264, 768Kbps, 23,976 fps, 128 Kbps).

The resolution is a bit trickier. It really depends on the resolution of the original and if the subs are hardcoded or not.

If you have an extra subtitle stream then you can leave the resolution at 480x320 and select manual crop to check how the video will be cropped. "Auto crop to fit" produces usually good results, but it evenly crops the top and bottom, which can sometimes cut of the top of the people's heads.

With hardcoded subs it's a bit harder. You have to pick a resolution that comes close to the original's aspect ratio and then manually crop it in such a way that the subtitles are completely visible on the bottom and not too much of the top is missing. You usually can't just crop widescreen movies to 480x320 because that would very often chop of parts of the subtitles left and right.

btw. I already converted hayate no gokuto 1-46. i just didn't get to release that crap yet.
